Environmentalists and Necessary Veganism

Posted on Updated on

If there’s one thing that makes my head want to explode it’s when someone claims to be an environmentalist but totally ignores or denies the ways in which animal agriculture is devastating our planet. It’s akin to being an oncologist who smokes.

In the news currently scientists are talking about how we just experienced the hottest 6 months recorded on Earth. 2014 included the hottest April, May, June, August, and September ever recorded. We like to pretend the effects of climate change are far off and we won’t be here to experience them, but scientists are predicting empty oceans by 2050 and the next major extinction? Not in hundreds of years, but in mere decades. I want to still be here in 2050 and I want to go snorkeling and still have coral reefs and marine wildlife to admire.

We can all bury our heads in the sand and pretend eating animals has nothing to do with climate change but did you know that animal agriculture accounts for more pollution than the whole transportation sector combined?

Everyone is up in arms about fracking, and rightly so; it’s a horrible practice, but we waste trillions of gallons more water in animal agriculture every year and the side effects (pollution, water and air) are along the same vein. Β We all freaked out about the drought this summer (ok maybe just CA) but nobody talked about the fact that animal agriculture is the biggest water waster on this planet.

All of the facts are there. We are on a path of destruction, but as consumers we have the power to create change. If we stop giving money to cruel environmentally devestating industries they will be forced to fade away.

All of this without even mentioning the unimaginable horror animals face everyday. They shoulder the burden of this planet’s insane appetite.

If we call ourselves environmentalists, let’s live by that.

We can be responsible compassionate consumers. We have to be.
